Three Briggs School 4-H students and two Santa Paula High FFA members came away with ribbons for their animals at the Ventura County Fair last week.

This was the sixth year for Amber Morales, a freshman at Santa Paula High School to have an animal at the fair. This year she took Supreme Grand Champion honors with her market goat and 4H Reserve Champion. She said she plans to continue raising goats through high school.  “I do it because it’s a good learning experience and it teaches me how to be more responsible,” she added.

Angie Castaneda also raised a market goat. She won 4H Reserve Champion for her animal. This was her second year for raising a goat. She recently graduated from high school and is attending Cal State Channel Islands this fall, so this was her last year at the fair. She said she’s not sure if she wants to major in business or become a teacher.

Another Brigg’s 4-H winner was Daisy Stewart who had a market swine at the fair. She also got Reserve Champion honors this year as well as 4H Reserve Champion. She was also the Fed and Bred Champion. She’s going into 8th grade at Anacapa Middle School in Ventura and has been raising pigs for four years and she plans to continue. “They’re just fun animals to raise,” she said.

Laura Fernandez, a junior at Santa Paula High School won FFA Champion for her Market Goat. Sophomore Isabel Valle took FFA Reserve Champion honors for her Market Goat. Kaitlyn Olivares, also a sophomore, won FFA Reserve Grand Champion for her Market Lamb.
