Students from Briggs School spent a recent morning participating in a beach cleanup day with the Surfrider Foundation near the Ventura Pier. About 50 students, ranging in age from 6 to 14 took part. The students created tie-dye shirts for the event. The event was part of a summer service-learning curriculum. The Surfrider Foundation was started in Malibu in 1984 by a handful of surfers to protest threats to their local surf break at Malibu Point. The organization continued on for several years as a loose advocacy group until 1991, when the first chapters were founded. They now have chapters around the globe. They work to protect our oceans, waves and beaches.
