Do you have a child that loves to sing and dance? It’s time for them to step into the spotlight with the Santa Paula SPOTLIGHT Youth Theatre where children and youth can take center stage and learn from a “show biz” professional now making a name as a performer.

Alyssa Grant, a Santa Paula native now living in Los Angeles, and her business partner David Kenny started the program that begins October 6 with a series of classes for students 5 to 10 years old and 11 to 18 years old.

The goal of Spotlight is to provide affordable performance education to enrich the lives of children in the Santa Paula community, just as Grant said her life was enriched — actually changed — by performing.

“I grew up in the Santa Paula school system and we used to do a big musical each year, but they don’t do musicals on the elementary level anymore. But that really shaped me as a child and I decided to bring that to other children’s lives.”

Spotlight’s studio will be upstairs at 947 E. Main St. above Tisa’s Salon & Spa, owned by Alyssa’s mother Tisa Grant.

The month long classes will be held Wednesdays and Thursdays; for those 5 to 10 years old the musical theatre classes will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with advanced musical theatre classes for 11 to 18 years old following from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The program will end with a gala production with performance dates and the venue to be announced.

Grant said the program promises, “Every student gets a solo, every students gets a line…basically we’re creating our own musical and there’s no lead, all the students will be equal.

“Every student,” she added, “will have a chance to be in the spotlight…”

There will be two separate productions tailored to the age groups of the students.

“That’s the beauty of writing your own show — you can do whatever you want!”

A self-described “exuberant child” who was also “so eccentric” Grant found her niche when she was transferred from John Jenkins Academy to McKevett Elementary, which at the time was an Arts Magnet School including performance art.

With the end of such elementary level opportunities, “I got the sense that a program such as Spotlight is really needed. Spotlight children will become more confident, experience team building, leadership, public speaking and friendship. But mainly the biggest thing is confidence…and although some of the kids might just do it for fun they may find it’s something they want to do with their life.

“I knew at 7 years old,” that  I wanted to sing and be a performer, “and I don’t want a 7-year-old out there not have the opportunity to find out this is what they want to do with their life.”

Grant’s feet are firmly planted on her life path with performances in various musical shows for Universal Studios Hollywood and Six Flags Magic Mountain, as well as appearing on The Glee Project Season 2 on the Oxygen Network. She has also performed several leading and supporting roles in regional musical theater productions in the Los Angeles area. Grant has a comprehensive background in teaching and directing youth, as well as four years of professional a cappella experience including singing the National Anthem to start parades in her Santa Paula hometown.

Her business partner Kenny has performed at multiple theme parks across Southern California, including Universal Studios Hollywood, SeaWorld San Diego, and Six Flags Magic Mountain. He has performed in numerous regional musical theatre productions with leading roles including Little Shop of Horrors, RENT, Forever Plaid and The Producers. He also has an extensive choral background and has professional a cappella experience.

“All my life I felt I didn’t fit in because I was heavy,” said Grant who found “What I loved to do was performing and singing…when I do I feel so free, there is no limit to what I can do, whatever I want to be there’s nothing I can’t do.

“I found someplace that feels like home, not in the wwwsense of a place but in doing what you love…it’s amazing. I have no interest in fame, I just want to make a living doing what I love and be that person on the stage.”
