Steve Padilla hurls one-hit gem in 3-0 win over Lone Pine

Cardinals beat Lone Pine by a score of 3-0 in the second round of the CIF Division 6 playoffs Tuesday afternoon in front of 400 avid baseball fans at Santa Paula High.

“He’s been our No. 1 guy and that’s exactly why,” Santa Paula coach Gabe Diaz said.

Steve Padilla threw a one hit shutout and yielded a walk in the top of the sixth inning to break up his perfect game. In the seventh inning with one out Padilla yielded a lined single to left field and walked another Eagle then finished off the gem with two additional strike outs to finish with 13. Padilla improved his season record to 11 – 3 and “my two seam fastball and curve were working very well”. said Padilla. 

In the top of fourth inning, Eagle Garrett Sullivan blasted a ball down the third base line that handcuffed Bryce Garcia and threw him out in a bang- bang play of first base.

The Cardinals (20 – 6) will play in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2009.

Ryan Cappello pitched extremely well for Lone Pine Eagles striking out eight Cardinals in a valiant losing effort.  Tony Contreras lined a sharp single down the left field line, 

Tomas Frutos had a sacrifice bunt, while Contreras advance to second, Bryce Garcia’s hit to center field on a fastball and Tony Contreras scored the first run of the game. 

Mike Button, Lone Pine coach stated “the Cardinals are a well coached team and a couple of our defensive’s  lapses cost up the game”.  We had a 225 mile bus ride to Santa Paula and the same distance going home but that not an excuse since we finished in  second place to our league to Desert Christian champion for the past ten years.

The Cardinals stranded runners in the second and fifth innings.  In the bottom half of the sixth inning was the difference in the contest and Anthony Morales lead off with a sharp single to left field and stole second base while Bryce Garcia was at bat. Bryce 

Garcia had a sacrifice bunt and Morales advanced to third base.  Armondo Tarin beat the throw to first base and Morales scored the second run, Tarin stole second base and scored on a wild-pitch by Cappello for the third and final run of the game.   “Good pitching, solid defense and timely hitting wins games, “ Diaz said
