Ellen May Duarte Caldwell

Ellen May Duarte Caldwell joined her lord on December 31, 2016.  May, as she was known, was born November 22, 1919 in her family home in Santa Paula to parents Peter L. Duarte and Mary Martha Duarte where she became the youngest sibling to brother Norbert and sister Betsy.

May lived in Santa Paula her entire life.  She attended Isbell grammar school and graduated from Santa Paula High School in 1938.  While in high school May was active in Tri Pi Omega, band, orchestra, art club and Girls Athletic Association.  After high school she attended Ventura College and graduated in 1940 in Home Economics.

During WW2, May was a flight dispatcher at Mira Loma Flight Academy for beginning Army Air Cadets.   After the war she worked for Dr. Kenneth Koch, DDS.

On September 18, 1949, May married her classmate George W. Caldwell Jr.  They were happily married for 58 years and adopted 2 children.

May was a member of the Santa Paula Presbyterian Church for over 85 years, taught Sunday school for grades 1 – 3 and for a number of years she served on the board of Deacons.  May was active in Children’s Home Society, PEO and a charter member of King’s Daughter’s now known as Loyal Friends.  The group started in 1942 with 12 members and continues to be active.

May is survived by her son Mark Caldwell of Oklahoma City, OK; daughter Martha Caldwell of Lake Oswego, OR and numerous cousins and nieces.

A memorial service will be held on January 12th, 2pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 121 Davis Street, Santa Paula, CA.  A reception will be held following the service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Presbyterian Church or the charity of their choice.
