Raymond Lloyd McCalister

Raymond Lloyd McCalister, Jr. passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 23, 2017 with his family by his side.  Ray was born February 12, 1946 in the County of York, England.  He was the first of three children born to Raymond and Laura McCalister, Sr. In 1963, the day after graduation from Santa Paula High School, he went to work for Mac’s Plumbing, the family owned business.  In 1979, he ran the business for several years, always working hard and never afraid to get his hands dirty, before “retiring” the first time, even though he never really hung it up.  A few years later, Ray decided to hit the road and bought his first of many “trucks”.  He continued to drive until he turned 65, and then retired a final time.  Because of his passion for work and many admirable skills he was frequently called upon by family and friends. His work was never really done, which was the way he liked it. You could always count on Ray to drop everything to be there and offer a hand.  He loved the thrill of the next project, whether it was welding, plumbing, building, or working on his prized ’51 Chevy.  Despite all his projects, Ray always had time to stop and chat.  Ray took great pride in his family enjoying trips to the lake and riding his assortment of toys.

Raymond was preceded in death by his mother, Laura, and brother, Doug.  He is survived by his loving family, father, Ray Sr; children Kim, Eric (& Jen), and Mike (& Amber) McCalister; grandchildren Evan & Austin Martinez and Hailey & Chelsea McCalister; brother and sister-in-law Ian and Sue McCalister, niece Julie (& Greg) Bergman, and nephew Brian (& Laurie) McCalister.  Ray is also survived by his longtime partner, Diana Dickenson and family Jamie, David and Hallie Shoenburger and Katy, Garrett, Madeline, and John Goldman; and favorite “children” bunnies Eek, Squeak & ‘Mite, and his “taco monster” Poppy.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery.  A reception to celebrate Ray’s life will be held immediately following at the home of Mike & Amber McCalister.  Arrangements are under the direction of Skillen-Carroll Mortuary, (805) 525-3391.
