Abie was born in Santa Paula on May 16, 1932 to the union of Abelino Castro, Sr. and Rosalia Calderon.Abie served in the U.S. Navy for four years in the 1950s. He often joked that he joined the Navy to see the world and ended up in San Diego. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he came home to Santa Paula where he worked in the construction field as a member of the Laborer’s Local 585 and also in the asphalt industry for many years prior to his retirement.Abie was a man of many talents. He was a gifted musician and loved to play his guitar and sing with his brothers and sisters, at the gatherings of family and friends, the many Spanish language songs that they all knew. Just in case he might need it, he never left home without his guitar in the trunk of his “classic” 1962 Ford Fairlane, affectionately referred to as “Fungus Amongus.” The guitar never stayed in the trunk, it was always needed.Abie could not only play the music he loved, he could dance to it even better. When Abie and Alice started dancing, everyone cleared the floor and stood around them to watch the show. They told “Fred and Ginger” to move over!He was also a very gifted craftsman who loved working with wood. He made many useful and decorative items for his home as well as for his family and friends. He was always willing to lend a hand when someone was in need of his help.Abie was also an artist and loved to draw. He had a collection of sketchpads full of drawings. These drawings will now be treasured by those family members lucky enough to have one.Abe is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Alice; brothers Rudy (wife Emily), Raul “Pini” (wife Chela), and Robert (wife Della) of Ventura and Gilbert (wife Jill) of Mission Viejo; sisters Josephine Cuevas (husband Fernando of Fresno and Frances Chacon (husband John) of El Rio; and sister-in-law Connie (Raymond) Castro of Ventura. Although Abie and Alice had no children, he was surrounded by his 20 loving nieces (10) and nephews (10), whose lives were all touched by his wisdom, humor, generosity and, most of all, his love. They soon added 32 great-nephews and nieces and two great-great nephews. Abie, along with his wife Alice, also had many, many godchildren through baptism, confirmation, or as Padriños at their weddings.Abie was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Arnulfo and Raymond, and sister Maria del Carmen.Viewing will be held on Monday, November 21 from 12 to 5 p.m. at Funeraria del ángel Stetler Mortuary, 128 S. 8th St. in Santa Paula.
