The Newport Harbor Sailors dominated the basketball court last week as they defeated the Cardinal teams at home. The Santa Paula varsity put up the biggest fight, doing their best to keep up with the visiting team. In the end Newport came out on top with a 63-41 final score.Chepe Lara, normally the high scorer for the Cards, was held to only 11 points for the game. The 6’7” Lara usually can control the ball under the net, but he was double-teamed most of the game and didn’t get much opportunity to go for the net. Andrew Carrera and Johnny Carrillo both had a good night from the outside. They each had three, three-point shots during the game. The Sailors led 20-10 and the end of the first quarter and had a 31-20 advantage at the half. The Santa Paula JV squad also put up a good fight. They lost their game 55-31.Newport Harbor jumped out to an early lead and was ahead 19-8 at the end of the first quarter. By the half the Sailors led 38-15.Hijinio Banuelos was the high scorer for the Cardinals with 10 points. Kevin Rodriguez followed with 8. Daniel Diaz shot for 6 points and Daniel Pachuca had 4.The Santa Paula freshmen team had the toughest time of the evening, losing 69-26.
The Cardinal frosh was up against a bigger, sophomore squad that pretty much over whelmed them.Giovanni Medrano and Alejandro Perez both led the scoring for the Cards with 6 points each. Adrian Quiorz had 5, Alfredo Cordova shot for 4 points, Mathew Medina had 3 and Joseph Rodriguez had 2 points. The varsity is playing in the Ventura Varsity Tournament this week and the younger Cards are playing in the Nordhoff Frosh/Soph Tournament. All three levels return to regular play next Monday, January 2 at Oak Park.
