Palmdale woman dies, brother injured in Hwy 126 accident

Westbound Highway 126 was closed for hours after a single-vehicle traffic accident just east of Santa Paula on Wednesday that left one woman dead and her brother in critical condition, according to California Highway Patrol and Ventura County Fire Department spokesmen.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesWestbound Highway 126 was closed for hours after a single-vehicle traffic accident just east of Santa Paula on Wednesday that left one woman dead and her brother in critical condition, according to California Highway Patrol and Ventura County Fire Department spokesmen.The accident occurred when Yvonne Hatfield, 29 of Palmdale and her passenger, her brother, Alfred Seaman, address and age unknown, were traveling westbound on Highway 126 at about 2:25 p.m.For an unknown reason in the vicinity of Willard Road Hatfield’s vehicle veered off the highway, striking a utility pole.It is unknown at what speed of the vehicle driven by Hatfield was at the time of the collision but it is not believed she was speeding, according to a CHP spokesman.Upon impact the vehicle was wrapped around the pole in a U-shape...Hatfield was killed instantly.
Santa Paula and Ventura County Fire departments responded to the scene and the latter had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate Seaman and Hatfield from the vehicle, which due to the damage was extremely difficult, according to VCFD PIO/Cpt. Barry Parker.The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department dispatched a helicopter to the scene that landed on the highway west of the accident.After Seaman was extricated from the vehicle he was flown to Ventura County Medical Center; his condition was unknown at press time.One witness to the aftermath of the accident said that the vehicle was so damaged that “I couldn’t even tell what kind of car it was,” said David Brock of Santa Paula. “It was almost completely wrapped around the pole and looked like it had been just shattered...”The investigation into the accident is continuing according to the CHP spokesman.
