August (Gus) Walker Gus Walker, 92, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2006 in Ojai. Gus was born on May 15, 1914 in Jarbalo, Kansas.As a young man he moved to California; and later enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served his country during World War II. He was a member of the 55th Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) stationed in New Guinea in the South Pacific.After the war he settled in Ventura County, where he resided for over 60 years. He was a plumber for Oxnard Plumbing and Heating Company for 25 years, but his true passion was his beloved ranch in Wheeler Canyon, Santa Paula, where he enjoyed raising cattle, growing crops and hunting with his dogs. He would tell his family that life on the ranch was like having Christmas every day.He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Mosbarger Walker; brothers Nelson Walker and Jim Todd; sisters Fern Johnson, Leota Rioux and Marie Todd; and stepson Lee LaCasse. He is survived by his son Tom (Barbara) Walker of Whispering Pines, North Carolina; brother Lloyd (Caretta) Walker of Deer Park, Washington; six grandchildren, Greg Walker, Denise Dworsak, Paul Moore, and Robin, David and Lorrie LaCasse; and many nieces and nephews.A graveside service will be held at Bardsdale Cemetery in Fillmore on Wednesday, October 18 at 10 a.m.Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1528 Chapala St., Suite 204, Santa Barbara, CA 93101.Arrangements are under the direction of Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Pauline (Polly) Cochran, age 87, passed away peacefully on October 13 at the Fillmore Convalescent Center.Polly was born on February 28, 1919 in Clovis, New Mexico. She moved to Santa Paula at an early age, and had been a county resident ever since.Her 45-year career with Bank of America in Santa Paula was accomplished without missing a day of work. She loved bowling, and considered joining the Women’s Pro Circuit at one time. She was well known for her volunteer work, which included 7,000 hours at the Santa Paula Memorial Hospital Gift Shop, Santa Paula Friends of the Library, working with the Ventura Police Department, Santa Paula Boys & Girls Club, cancer drives, and numerous clubs.Polly is survived by two nieces and their husbands, Suzan and Mark Cooper of Bakersfield, and Beverly and Don Brainard of San Jose; and by close friends Gloria and Steve Hanson of Santa Paula and Cleo and Chuck Reiche of Camarillo.Burial will be at Santa Paula Cemetery. Private services will be held.
