Dr. Stegman, Eaton-Walkup accorded top Fainer Award

By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula TimesA Santa Paula physician and an RN are being accorded top honors by the Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation in recognition of their personal commitment and dedication in supporting the medical profession and the healthcare needs of area residents. Dr. David Stegman and Becky Eaton-Walkup will be saluted February 2 at the Foundation’s Annual David C. Fainer award banquet, to be held at the Ventura Beach Marriott.The awards were established in the late Dr. Fainer’s honor. He was director of the nationally recognized Family Practice Residency Program, as well as the medical director of Internal Medicine at Ventura County Medical Center.Dr. Stegman, a longtime area resident who retired in December 2002 and is active with the Santa Paula Rotary Club, is being honored as the Fainer Physician Emeritus. Dr. Stegman served as an Army physician - he received the Army Commendation Award - and later practiced in partnership with Dr. Richard Tushla at Westside Family Practice in Santa Paula. Dr. Stegman and his wife Linda, an RN, have traveled extensively since his retirement, volunteering medical help and assistance to the needy throughout the world.Eaton-Walkup has been named the Fainer Community Nurse of the Year. She received her BS in Nursing and a public health certificate at USC, and her geriatric nurse practitioner from Cal State Long Beach. Eaton-Walkup has worked at Santa Paula Memorial Hospital, St. John’s Regional Medical Center and Santa Clara Valley Hospice.
Also being honored are Physician of the Year Dr. John V. Hill, the former Chief of Surgery at VCMC; Hospital Nurse of the Year Marisa Mitchell Montgomery; Dentist of the Year Dr. Mark Lisagor, who, like Dr. Stegman, has volunteered his services internationally - whose specialty is children’s dentistry; and Volunteer of the Year Sandor Vandor, who devotes time to the VCMC Infusion Center.Dr. Pierre Durand, who retired earlier this year as the head of the Ventura County Health Care Agency and helped to lead its successful effort to purchase and reopen Santa Paula Hospital, is receiving a Special Fainer Award for his years of service.Themed “Dreams Do Come True,” the 14th annual banquet will also recognize the 50th anniversary of the Foundation, which raises funds on behalf of the Ventura County Health Care Agency.
