The Santa Paula High School girls’ softball team has new leadership this year. Barry Barnes has taken over the head coaching duties. Barnes has coached at Buena High and does individual pitching and hitting instruction for about eight years and has coached youth softball as well.Barnes said the varsity is looking very well for the new season. “We have a lot more experienced team than last year,” he said. “We should be able to build a lot on what we did last year. We’re going to be a very fast team. We’ve got a lot of team speed and very good pitching.” He says Nianna Morris is their top pitcher and Janessa Pulido is also back and should be very good.Others to watch according to Barnes include Talisa Garcia at shortstop and Kaitlyn Heinz, who he believes will be hard to catch running bases. Also, he lists Jasmine Rodriguez, playing at centerfield and Shaylene Hernandez who he says is probably the strongest power hitter in the Frontier League.
Barnes says it’s going to be a very competitive league this year. “We should end up at first or second place in league,” he noted. He thinks it should come down to Santa Paula and Fillmore vying for first and second.
