Stray bullet narrowly misses child

Friday the 13th proved to be lucky for a Santa Paula child who was narrowly missed by a stray bullet in a shooting incident being investigated by Santa Paula Police, according to a SPPD spokesman.

Joe de los Reyes, when “numerous 911 calls regarding gunfire in the 100 block of Sheppard Road,” were received.“There were 15 to 20 shots heard in the area according to the initial report,” said Lt. Mike Saviers.An unidentified suspect or suspects fired gunshots at a vehicle driving on Sheppard Road and one of the bullets “shattered a window to a nearby residence,” said Sgt. de los Reyes. “The stray bullet traveled through the interior of the residence and lodged in a wall...the bullet narrowly missed a small child who was sitting on the living room couch.”Lt. Saviers said that witnesses reported a “small, light-colored vehicle leaving the area...we don’t know if it was the suspect fleeing or the victim fleeing.”
SPPD Officers also went to Santa Paula Hospital to determine if a gunshot victim was being treated in the Emergency Room.The bullet that narrowly missed the child is the “only stray we have reported or located...there was some physical evidence recovered” that is not being revealed to avoid hampering the investigation.Sheppard Road is just west of Peck Road off Telegraph Road, “one way in and one way out...it’s a dead end street,” noted Lt.
