A proposed renovation and restoration plan for the Santa Paula Union High School gymnasium and auditorium took center stage at the August High School District regular Board of Trustees meeting. Tim Wallace, an architect with Rasmussen & Associates presented architectural plans detailing possible changes, and heard suggestions and questions from Board Members. An infusion of funds generated by Proposition 1A will provide the bulk of the expense for the project, eighty percent, with the district providing the remainder, after final approval of the plans by the Board of Trustees and by the state. The project is expected to cost over $3 million. Work could begin on the project in April 2000, with completion slated for January 2001.Design committees provide input throughout the planning process. Proposed improvements to the gym now include expanded men and women’s restroom facilities on either side of the gym lobby, and the addition of a multipurpose room in the front of the gym which can be used for visiting teams, Dr. William Brand, District Superintendent, explained Friday. Plans call for adding a wrestling room to the rear of the gym facility and the addition of a women’s restroom there as well. Reallocation of existing space would allow for a training room. Both the gym and auditorium will undergo renovations of electrical systems. Proposed renovations to the auditorium include construction of a stage craft room in the rear of the building, renovation of the mezzanine and lobby, expanded restrooms, and reupholstered seating in the auditorium. The mural presently in the lobby will remain. Proposed changes are designed in compliance with requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, officials said.In addition to reviewing proposed architectural plans, the Board of Trustees recognized the incoming Student Board Member for the 1999-00 school year at the August 11 meeting. Andrew Gonzalez was installed as the 1999-00 Student Board Member.
Associated Student Body (ASB) Advisor Lisa Salas Schmidt was recognized for her many accomplishments and as a role model for both students and staff. District employees John Jacinto and Ray Cardenas were honored for their work, as well. Ray Cardenas was lauded as an employee who gives 110% all the time, going beyond what is asked. Dr. William Brand praised John Jacinto as “the kind of employee we’re so grateful to have.”The Board of Trustees approved the employment of the new Director of Educational Services, Dr. Carol Anne Ramnarine. Dr. Ramnarine has over 25 years of experience in education, and has been honored as a “Hero in Education.” “I feel like I belong here,” she said. “All of the people have made me feel welcome.”
