Santa Paulans go to the polls for February 5th Presidential Primary

Although handed in absentee and provisional ballots remain to be released, Ventura County had a rare strong showing at the polls for the February 5 Presidential Primary, with 48.07 percent of the vote.

Some polling places registered voters in the 53 percent range, while one only booked a 36.34 percent turnout.The county’s 384,273 registered voters are split almost evenly between Democratic - 148,441 registered - and Republicans - 148,914 - but Democrats turned out stronger for the primary. Throughout Ventura County, 65.15 percent of Democrats voted and only 50.80 percent of Republicans. When it came to using absentee ballots, each party had almost 19 percent who voted by mail.
Hillary Clinton garnered 53.44 percent of Democratic voters and Barack Obama 39.9 percent, and the field of other Democratic candidates booked less than 1 percent support each.John McCain got the vote of 41.34 percent of Republican voters, and Mitt Romney - who has since announced that he is dropping his presidential bid - had 35.43 percent. Mike Huckabee had a noteworthy third place showing with 11.88 percent.Only 24.62 percent of those 7,984 voters registered with the American Independent Party handed in primary ballots, while the Libertarian Party drew 34.06 percent of its 2,017 registrants. The Green Party had a 28.91 percent turnout among its 2,698 registered voters, and the Peace & Freedom Party, which has 868 voters registered countywide, saw a 19.93 percent turnout.Nonpartisan registered voters - who could not cast a vote for the Republican candidates per a decision of the state party - had a 6.12 percent turnout from 69,450 registrants.
