By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe report of a man who was suffering from a stab wound last week turned out to be an attempted suicide, according to a Santa Paula Police Department spokesman. Senior Officer Ryan Smith said the incident was reported on September 22 at approximately 4:29 p.m. when SPPD Officers responded to the 700 block of West Harvard Boulevard on the report of a stabbing victim at the location.
“Upon arrival, officers located Guillermo Tovar” sitting in the driveway of a residence with a stab wound to his abdomen. “Officers located a knife nearby and were able to determine that the stab wound was self-inflicted,” noted Smith. “When officers got there, they realized it was suicide attempt” and not an assault.Santa Paula Fire Department EMTs and American Medical Response paramedics also responded to the scene, where the 45-year-old Tovar was treated before being transported by ambulance to the Ventura County Medical Center trauma center. Tovar “Immediately underwent emergency surgery,” and his condition, Smith said, is unknown. “It’s a sad situation,” and Smith said there is “very little information” on what might have prompted the suicide attempt.
