The Cardinal varsity started off strong Friday in their 26-7 victory over Malibu, leaving Santa Paula with the possibility of an undefeated season and a Frontier League Championship. Santa Paula was in charge from the first kickoff as Zach McClain ran the ball over 50 yards to the 36-yard line. Anthony Murillo got the ball to the Malibu 7 and moments later Mike Vera scored the first Santa Paula touchdown off a pass from quarterback Max Moreno. The point after kick by Gilbert Mora was good, leaving the Cards in the lead 7-0. Murillo scored a TD for the Cards with two minutes left in the quarter.Murillo scored again late in the second quarter, giving Santa Paula a 20-0 edge. With just a short time left in the quarter Malibu scored and the point after kick put the score at 20-7.The third quarter was a draw, with no score. With 9:19 left in the fourth quarter McClain caught a 14-yard pass for a TD. The PAT pass was unsuccessful. This was last TD of the game.Gusty winds made things difficult at times during the game. Kicking into the wind proved to be a problem for both teams.
The final game of the regular season is at home Friday against Grace Brethren. The varsity contest starts at 7:30 p.m. Pairings for the CIF playoffs will be announced Sunday, November 16. We’ll have the results of the draw next Wednesday.
