Cardinal varsity boys’ basketball team holds on to beat Fillmore in a nail-biter

The Santa Paula varsity beat Fillmore last week 57-53 in a game that had spectators on the edge of their seats. At the end of the first quarter Fillmore led by 3 points. The Cards led 21-20 at half time. After three quarters of play the game was tied 36-36. Two Fillmore players fouled out and Santa Paula hit 11 of 20 free throws in the fourth quarter to beat the Flashes. Fillmore hit only 6 of 19 free throws. Free throw shooting was the difference in the contest of the two potentially CIF bound Frontier League teams.Top scorers for Santa Paula were: Andrew Jimenez and Anthony Del Rio each had 13, Eduardo Jimenez and Antonio Rios 8 apiece, Gilbert Mora 7 and Andrew Huizar 6.Santa Paula is 4-2 in league play and 5-17 overall.The Cardinal Frosh also won in their game, beating the Flashes 57-45.This game was very close for the first three quarters, with Santa Paula holding a 1-point lead. In the final quarter the Cards outscored the Flashes 22-11 and Fillmore missed 12 of 13 free throws in the final period.Top Santa Paula scorers: Kameron Klein 25, Sunny Jackson 21, Hayden McClain 6 and Miguel Villa 5.
The Santa Paula JV had a tougher time of it. The Flashes dominated the contest and won 66-53.Fillmore jumped out to a 14-4 edge after the first quarter. At the half the Flashes led 30-13. Top scorers for the Cards: Juan Martinez 18, Taylor Casas 11, and Juan Reyes 6.Santa Paula plays at Bishop Diego today starting at 4:00 p.m.
