The Cardinal varsity football squad got their first win of the season Thursday with a 23-13 victory over Golden Valley High. Senior Ivan Ledesma was a one-man scoring machine, getting two of Santa Paula’s touchdowns in the second half. He scored on a 94-yard reverse kickoff return and then hit the end zone again on a 69-yard screen pass thrown by quarterback Kameron Klein.Ledesma caught five passes during the game for 125 yards. Klein in only his second game as QB, went 9 for 14 for139 yards. He had one interception.“It was a great win for this program to defeat a team from the Foothill League,” said Cardinal coach Teohua Sanchez. “Defense played a great game...led by Senior Joe Camacho. Esteban Magana intercepted his third pass of the year. Coach Reyes again had another spectacular game plan.”Sanchez said that the Special Teams was big once again! “We had two kick off returns for a Touchdown but one was called back,” he said. “We stopped a fake punt and kicked a field goal. Coach Myke Montoya is doing a phenomal job with special teams, his hard work and effort has paid off.”Sanchez noted that the offense showed what it is capable of doing with its opening drive. He added that, “Kameron Klien showed poise, the offensive lineman made great blocks and the wide receivers caught the ball. The offense greatly improved since the first game and will continue to improve against Bishop Diego.”
The JV score was 50-0. “The JV team is very young but they continue to play hard,” he added. The Cards host Bishop Diego this Friday. The JV plays at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity starts at 7:30 p.m. The Bishop varsity lost to Fillmore last week, 27-25, giving them an 0-3 record so far this year. Santa Paula is 1-1.
