H. Charles Slaughter was born October 3, 1923 in Brackenridge, Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1941 from Har-Brack High School, and attended Kiski Preparatory School in Saltsburg, PA, graduating in 1942.He then attended the University of North Carolina, and played on their first football team in the position of tackle. He left the university to enlist in the Navy as an Airborne Radar Instructor.On September 11, 1945 Charles married Marion Louise Orrill. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946, and was employed by the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) Research Laboratory in New Kensington, PA, where he remained until 1955. In 1955, he graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA with a degree in Chemical Engineering.He was then hired by Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, CA, and the family moved to California. He was chosen to move to Lockheed Martin in Marietta, Georgia on special assignment as a corrosion expert, and was there several years until their contract ended. In the ‘60s he moved to the Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space branch in Sunnyvale, CA, and worked as the manager of operations engineering there. Following that assignment, the family moved to Santa Paula, where he resided for around 30 years. He retired from Lockheed in 1986.While in Georgia, he was active in the men’s barbershop chorus. He also enjoyed writing poetry, and attended the Ojai Poetry Association that met at the Ojai Art Center. Several of his poems were published in the local magazine, Rivertalk.He is survived by his wife, Marion Slaughter of Ventura; daughter Moondance Foxmarnick and granddaughter Talon Foxmarnick of Santa Paula; nephews, David and Leonard Jr.; and nieces Kay Kummer, Laura, and Joann.He was cremated according to his wishes.

Julio D. Salazar
Santa PaulaA lifelong resident of Santa Paula, Julio D. Salazar, 84, passed away after a brief illness in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 4, 2009.Julio serve in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater with the 327th Air Engineer Squadron, 20th Air Force. He was inducted in June 1943, was overseas from August 1944 to February 1946, and later was honorably discharged.He had many loves and interests, but a few stand out: when he worked for Local 585 Construction Laborers from 1948 to 1978. Julio’s memberships included VFW and Laborers International Union of North America.Julio was a great man. He had an amazing sense of humor, and was often heard telling jokes that would be echoed by his wonderful laugh.He is now reunited with his parents, Juan and Angela Salazar; brothers Nieves Salazar, Tony Salazar and Stanley Salazar; and sister Mary Alvarado. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Arellano Salazar; son Raul (wife Sara) Salazar; grandsons Julio Salazar and Eric Salazar; sister Cruzie Flores; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.All family and friends are invited to a military graveside service in Julio’s honor on Thursday, October 15 at 12 p.m. at Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery, 380 Cemetery Rd., Santa Paula.Arrangements are under the direction of Funeraria del angel Stetler Mortuary, 128 S. 8th St., Santa Paula, (805) 525-5595.H.
