The Santa Paula varsity is now at 2-3 for the season.
“The 2009-2010 Santa Paula boys’ basketball team would like to thank our community for their continued sponsorship of our program, said Head Coach David Urias. “We are looking forward to another fun, exciting, and successful season. Once again, we strive to play the best competition in our county to prepare us for our league campaign. Returning freshmen coaches are Danny Guzman and Abel Mejia. They did a great job last year and we anticipate having a fine season from our rookie team.”
On the JV level, Coach Del Rio is on a leave of absence. Urias said that they hope to get him back soon. “We would like to introduce Rob Lemons, Santa Paula class of ‘95,” said Urias. “He joins us from Ventura where he has coached various youth teams and is familiar with some of our players today.”
Urias added: “On the Varsity Level, we are a young team with only two returning players. That doesn’t mean we will not be competitive. The new players have many things to learn, especially that they are scholar-athletes first. We are trying to prepare them for life, as well as basketball. That includes working hard, budgeting time, being an athlete, and making sure that you dedicate yourself equally to all things. We need all of our multiple sport athletes to commit to our program. This is where budgeting their time can have a profound affect on our team success.”
The varsity has two players back to lead them, Antonio Rios and Eduardo Jimenez. Antonio is our best all around player and can definitely play at the next level,” Urias noted. “Eduardo, a junior is back for his second season on the varsity team. Our top newcomers include point guard Taylor Casas and shooting guard Juan Martinez. We have two inside threats in Alex Velazquez and Kameron Klein, both of whom add strength and size to our line-up.”
“We have other players who can contribute. It really depends on how good they want to be and if they are willing to put the time in that is needed. We look forward to seeing you this season!”
