The Santa Paula Traveling Basketball 6th graders recently tried for the championship in Carpinteria.

The Santa Paula Traveling Basketball 6th graders recently tried for the championship in Carpinteria.In the tournament first round, Santa Paula had a thrilling come-from-behind win over Goleta, 39-30. The 6th graders were down by 11 in the first quarter and 6 at the half. Daniel Kolbeck led the come back with his strong defense and rebounding. Robert Lascano led in scoring with 12 points, followed by Kolbeck with 11. Other scorers were Dustin Casas, 5; Scott Pacheco and Scott Wakefield with 4; and Alex Hernandez, 3.The second matchup with Santa Maria was close throughout the entire game. Santa Paula came away with a 39-34 victory. Lascano led the way with 12 points; Nick Pulido, 8; Casas and Hernandez both had 6 points; Kolbeck 4; and Pacheco, 2.In the final championship game, Santa Paula could not overcome a slow start and lost to Santa Barbara 42-36. Too many turnovers and lack of rebounding cost the 6th graders the championship. Hernandez led Santa Paula with 11 points; Pacheco, 6; Casas, 4; Pulido, Lascano, Brandon Rodriguez, 3 points each.
Santa Paula bounced back in a league game at Ventura, defeating the Ventura Magic 51-21.The 6th graders continue play on Johnson Drive in Ventura at 7:00 p.m. tonight. Other games are March 7th at 8:00 p.m. and March 14th at 6:00 p.m.
