The first round eliminated nearly half of the spellers. By the end of the fifth round, the only spellers remaining were Shelby Daniel, of Mupu School, and last year's area winner, Collins, last year's alternate, and newcomer Lochelt. Shelby became the runner up when she incorrectly spelled added a `k' on the end of mimic. Collins and Lochelt went on to spell two more words to take the honors. Collins and Lochelt win Area 5 spelling bee

Santa Paula Elementary School DistrictNick Collins, 11, a sixth-grade student in Santa Paula Elementary School District's home study class, and Sarah Lochelt, 12, a Fillmore Middle School eighth-grade student, will advance into the Ventura County Spelling Bee, against cream-of-the-crop spellers from the entire county in the Camarillo City Hall on March 21.Sixteen with gender evenly split with eight boys, and eight girls, from Santa Paula, Fillmore, Mupu, Briggs, and Santa Clara, competed at Glen City Elementary School in the Area 5 bee on Tuesday after winning at their individual sites.The winners were awarded spelling bee watches, T-shirts, and a list of study words for the upcoming bee. A win at the county bee will entitle them to go on to the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. the last week in May.
