A great big CONGRATULATIONS goes out to the winners of the 30th annual Santa Paula Elementary School District’s Young Writers’ Contest.   The creative writing contest yielded 79 winners in grades 1 through 8.  Brenda deJamaer, Library Ed. Specialist and coordinator of the District-wide contest, presented the young writers with their awards at a special recognition ceremony held on the evening of May 25, 2010.   Prizes were awarded at each grade level in the categories of poetry and short story.

In the short story category many genres were covered; there were mysteries, fantasy, science fiction, and historical fiction.  Students wrote poems and short stories about friends, school life, family, animals, feelings, books, reading, space and war.   In addition to writing for the Young Writers’ Contest the students were encouraged to also enter the Blanchard Community Library’s Writing and Art Contest in recognition of the Library’s Centennial Celebration.

Mrs. deJamaer stated that she was thrilled with the quality of writing and creativity from the students’ entries.   A big “THANK YOU” goes out to the 14 volunteers who gave their time and expertise to the difficult task of judging for this Contest.  The judges were Julia Copeland, Jeri Mead, Leslie Borchard, Donna Nelson and Patty Jones from the School District; Jerry Burns, Helen Gibson, Jackie Kwasny, Linda Spink, Phyllis Dorsey, and Lydia Valencia who are retirees from the School District; Bev Mueller from the Blanchard Community Library; Suzi Skutley from the Santa Paula Times; and Teri Rhodehamel, a published poet from the community.

Refreshments of cake and punch were provided and served by the Santa Paula Federation of Teachers for the winners and their families at the awards ceremony.  The cash prizes were provided by Mr. Jerry Burns with donations from Mrs. Pat Alderson, Mrs. Frida Friend, and the Santa Paula Elementary Chapter of CSEA.

Congratulations to this year’s winners!!
