Santa Paula News

Political watchers will want to tune in to Time Warner Cable Channel 10 for reruns of the October 5 City Council and Santa Paula Elementary School District forums.

The League of Women Voters Ventura County forum - City Council candidates went first, before those hoping to garner a seat on the SPESD Board of Trustees - was held in a single session at the Community Center. Time Warner and the City of Santa Paula co-sponsored the forum, which was taped for later replay on Cable Channel 10.

The Santa Paula City Council forum featured candidates Duane Ashby, Rick Cook, Ralph Fernandez, Bob Gonzales and Rita Stafford, who discussed their positions and responded to audience questions asked by the moderator, David Maron of Oxnard.

Fernandez and Gonzales are council incumbents who are both seeking their second elected four-year term. Councilman Dr. Gabino Aguirre declined to seek a third term on the council. Cook - a former two-term councilmember who also served as mayor - lost his bid for reelection in 2006; Ashby and Stafford are newcomers who are seeking first terms on the council.

The Santa Paula Elementary School District has three seats up for grabs, with incumbents Michelle Kolbeck, Tony Perez and Dan Robles seeking additional terms. The lone challenger is Timothy Hicks, who ran for the SPESD unsuccessfully in 2008.

Questions from forum audience members were submitted in written form and pre-screened by League of Women Voters members.

The Candidates Forum for City Council/Santa Paula Elementary School District Trustees playback schedule will be each Saturday at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.; Sundays 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.; Tuesdays, 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.; Wednesdays, 10 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Thursdays, 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.; and Fridays, 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. The Cable Channel 10 forum playbacks will not interfere with the televised live and repeats of City Council meetings, which will take place according to regular schedule.
