Varsity boys finish with win over Grace Brethren, CIF playoff game coming next week

The Santa Paula JV team blasted Grace Brethren by a score of 67 to 42 in their final contest of the season.

The Birds jumped out to 42 to 21 halftime lead and coasted to a 25-point victory over the Lancers.  Santa Paula’s’ defense was very impressive during the contest with 23 steals. Highlights for the Cardinals were: Brandon Casas, 24 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal; Adam Aguilera, 12 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal; Eduardo Chavez, 12 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal; Miguel Villa, 7 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals; Daniel Kohr, 6 points, 1 rebound, 6 steals; Eddie Perez, 3 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal, 1 blocked shot; Fidel Estrada, 2 points, 2 steals; Daniel Perez, 1 point, 1 rebound, 1 steal. The junior varsity completed their season with 15 wins and 3 defeats. Their Frontier League record was 7 wins and 3 loses.

Santa Paula’s theme for senior night was redemption after two consecutive defeats by Bishop Diego and Carpinteria last week and they finished with a 77-48 victory.

The Cardinals are the 10th ranked team in Division 4 A basketball rankings as of February 7th and the last rankings prior to the CIF playoff that begins Wednesday, February 17 (Schedule to be released over the weekend).

Mariah Dominguez, Mercedes Montoya, and Vivian Hernandez sang the National Anthem prior to the game.

Seniors Alex Velazquez, Juan Reyes, Eduardo Jimenez, Jesse Aguilar, and Taylor Casas started the game for the Cardinals.  Santa Paula clawed the Lancers with great offense and solid defense and jumped out to a 22 to 9 lead after the first quarter.  The Cards total domination increased their lead to 45 to 21 at halftime and they coasted to a 29-point victory over Grace Brethren.

The highlights for Santa Paula were: Eduardo Jimenez, 21 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals; Juan Reyes, 14 points, 2 rebounds; Gabriel Diaz, 11 points (2 three-point bombs from behind the arc), 8 rebounds, 1 steal; Sunny Jackson, 7 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal; Alex Velazquez, 7 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals; Tim Garcia, 5 points, 1 rebound; Taylor Casas, 4 points, 1 steal, Josh Garay, 4 points, 4 rebounds; Jessie Aguilar, 4 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal.

Santa Paula has completed their regular season with a record of 15 wins and 10 defeats.  The Cardinals’ Frontier league record was 6 wins and 4 defeats, good enough for second place.
