The Cardinal JV football squad put up a good fight, but lost their opening game of the season to Crescenta Valley High, 38-27.

The Cards had a rough first half, struggling to get their game together but got stronger in the second half, scoring three of their four touchdowns.  The Falcons scored their first TD about three minutes into the game, with a second a few minutes later after just three plays.  Their third TD of the first quarter came with about a minute and half left in the quarter, putting the score at 19-0.

Crescenta Valley got another touchdown on the scoreboard near the end of the second quarter.  The Santa Paula offense finally found their game with just seconds left in the first half on a long pass from quarterback Christian Garcia to freshman Jesus Castrejon.

The Cards scored again at the start of the fourth quarter on a run by Oscar Cancino.  It was quickly followed by a Falcons TD.  A few minutes later Garcia scored another touchdown.  Jonathan Contreras intercepted a pass, leading to another Garcia TD.

JV Coach Justin Schmidt said the team played well in the second half after a slow start.  “We had strong defensive play from Johnny Aguayo and Jojo Garcia,” he said.  “Christian Garcia played well on offense throwing two touchdowns and rushing for two. Oscar Cancino was our leading receiver and Jesus Castenjon also caught a touchdown.  We will have another tough game this Friday vs Pacifica at Ventura College starting at 4:30.”
