The Santa Paula Cardinals met up with a tough Bishop Diego team Friday night, losing the game 42-14.

Bishop got into the SP end zone three times in the first quarter, once in the third and again in the fourth.  The Santa Paula defense struggled to stop a Bishop running back and couldn’t get their offense going until the second half.

Coach Teojua Sanchez said afterwards, “It was a frustrating night on Friday. We are dealing with a rash of injuries in the first 3 weeks of the season. Unfortunately, we lost two more players due to injures on Friday, which brings the total of injured players to 8. We are playing shorthanded and playing with players that normally do not play that position.”  Wide receiver Hayden McClain filled in as quarterback for much of the game.  Christian Garcia was injured the previous week.

Sophomore Daniel Kohr scored twice in the second half for Santa Paula.  His first touchdown came from 10 yards out.  The second TD was off a 75-yard kickoff return.

Coach Sanchez said, “We must move forward and adjust our game plan accordingly to our personnel.  We need to do a better job tackling in the game; we had several missed tackles on Friday. We need to protect the ball better, we had two costly turnovers in the first half of the game.”

Santa Paula is on the road for the next four games.  This Friday they take on Hueneme at the Vikings’ field at 7:00 p.m.
