St. Paul’s and Emmanuel Church will be the scene of a special service Sunday by the former Bishop of Mexico City, who attended theological school in the United States and has made several appearances in Santa Paula.

According to Pastor Ron Dybvig, Bishop Sergio Carranza will preach and preside at Holy Communion October 16 at 10 a.m. at the church, located at 117 N. 7th Street. All are welcome to attend the service.

Pastor Dybvig said Bishop Carranza was the bishop of Mexico City and more recently assisted the Episcopal bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles. It is not Bishop Carranza’s first visit to St. Paul’s and Emmanuel Church.

“The Bishop has been with us a couple of times and he will conduct a baptism... other family members were confirmed by him” during past visits to Santa Paula, noted Pastor Dybvig. “I think it would be interesting to the people of Santa Paula that he was the Bishop of Mexico City before he came to Los Angeles.”

The former bishop of the Diocese of Mexico, Bishop Carranza graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary in the United States and was ordained a deacon at St. Paul’s in Washington, D.C. by Bishop William Creighton (son of the second bishop of Mexico) in 1967.

Bishop Carranza’s family began its service to the Anglican Church with his great-grandmother in the last decades of the 19th century. More than a century after her introduction to the Anglican Church, her great-grandson was elected bishop of the Diocese of Mexico.
