The Cardinal JV lost Friday’s game at the Fillmore field 35-0 Friday.

Santa Paula got within scoring distance several times, but couldn’t get past the Fillmore defense.  The Cardinal defense held the line in the first quarter until the Flashes lined up on the Santa Paula 6-yard line and went in for a touchdown.  The quarter ended with Fillmore leading 7-0.

The Flashes pushed hard in the second quarter scoring three more TDs.  One of those TDs came off a Santa Paula fumble at their own 9-yard line.  The Flashes were ahead 28-0 going into the half time break.

Neither team made any headway in the third quarter, with both teams being force to punt on fourth downs.  That changed as the fourth quarter started.  Fillmore got their last TD of the game from the Cardinal 6-yard line.

JV Coach Justin Schmidt commented on the game: “I know I sound like a broken record, but we really are moving in the right direction.  We are better this week than we were last week.  We played a better 2nd half than we did the first half.  Isaac Veloz and Aldo Magana played well on defense and Daniel Campos and Stevie Padilla stood out on offense.  We can’t and won’t use injuries or the number of Sophomores on varsity (6 are currently starting on the varsity) as an excuse.  These boys are working hard and getting better.  We will get healthy during our buy and will be ready to play a tough CI team next week.”

Santa Paula has a bye this week and will return Friday, September 28 with a home game against Channel Islands.
