Local resident selected for Japanese government program

Alissa Sumiko Irion, daughter of William and Kumiko Iron of Santa Paula, has been selected to participate in the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. Ms. Irion is a recent graduate of Vanderbilt University, having earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and East Asian Studies. She is one of approximately 2,500 finalists from the United States and will depart for Japan on Saturday, July 28th from Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport to spend one year as an assistant language teacher in Hasami Town, Nagasaki. The JET Program invites young college graduates to Japan to teach English in schools or to engage in international exchange activities at local government offices. The participants receive a generous stipend and round trip airfare to Japan. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, and have a bachelor’s degree; they are not required to have knowledge of the Japanese language. Over 26,000 U.S. citizens have taken part in the program since its establishment in 1987.This program provides a unique opportunity for Americans to immerse themselves in Japanese culture.
