Rotary?s new teachers? BBQ welcomes educators, Harris Fellowship awarded

Educators received a warm welcome at the traditional Rotary Club New Teacher?s Barbecue held recently at the Wilson Ranch where the menu included a large serving of Santa Paula hospitality and a special honor to a Rotarian spouse.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesEducators received a warm welcome at the traditional Rotary Club New Teacher?s Barbecue held recently at the Wilson Ranch where the menu included a large serving of Santa Paula hospitality and a special honor to a Rotarian spouse.?I feel this is one of Rotary?s premiere events,? Club President Elias Valdes told the crowd. ?It?s a feather in our cap to welcome the teachers. . .one facet of Rotary is to make the world a better place,? and teachers match that Rotary ideal. ?Service above self is our motto, and service is our product.?Valdes told of Rotary accomplishments internationally and in Santa Paula, including the club?s heavy involvement in scholarships for graduating seniors.?People who make a difference in life are those who care. . .teachers are those in our community who care,? said Marsha Rae. ?Teachers make sure people have the skills and compassion to succeed. . .?Cathy McGee was warmly greeted by the crowd: Cathy McGee, a former Santa Paula resident, is back teaching at Mupu School; her husband, Bruce, had been active with the Santa Paula Rotary Club.Santa Paula Elementary School District Superintendent Bonnie Bruington had new administrators introduce and then handed the reins of teacher introductions to the school principals. Glen City Elementary School is welcoming eight new teachers who were introduced by Principal Nora Byrum.
Olivelands Elementary School, part of the Briggs School District, also had a new teacher at the event who noted that teachers at times wonder if their efforts are appreciated. ?Something like this makes it real, makes it wonderful,? said Nicole Wallingford, who is teaching second grade.Santa Paula High School Principal Tony Gaitan thanked Rotary for ?making so many people feel so welcomed. . .? as he introduced new SPHS teachers.?It?s a great crop of new teachers,? who will benefit the lives of Santa Paula students, said Rae.Valdes said part of what makes Santa Paula special is the ?people, and these teachers can look around and see the support Rotary has for them and for education.?Also during the barbecue, Rotarian Rob Sawyer presented his wife, Alison, with a Paul Harris Fellowship Award. ?She has functioned as my coach and teammate in everything we do,? said Sawyer. ?For 25 years Alison has greeted me with ?Hi, what did you do in Rotary today?? ?Alison Sawyer now joins about 270,000 Paul Harris Fellowship recipients worldwide.
