A traffic stop led to an arrest for an allegation weapons violation including possession of “high capacity magazines,” according to a Santa Paula Police spokesman.

SPPD Sgt. Scott Varner said the arrest was made Tuesday evening following a traffic stop on a vehicle holding three individuals.

The October 29 traffic stop occurred at about 10:30 p.m. when a SPPD Officer halted a vehicle in the 300 block of North 14th Street on the city’s eastside located between Santa Paula and Saticoy streets.

“During the contact, one of the occupants of the vehicle was found to be on probation,” and Varner said officers conducted a probation search of the vehicle.

Probationary terms often allow for such searches, particularly for those convicted of gang-related incidents.

During the probation search, Varner said a handgun was located with “high-capacity magazines,” capable of holding numerous bullets for repeating firearms.

Rigoberto Mejia, 35 of Santa Paula, was arrested and charged with suspicion of possession of a concealed firearm and possession of high capacity magazines.

Varner said the other two occupants of the vehicle were also arrested and then released pending further investigation.
