An incident that officials initially feared would keep one lane of eastbound Highway 126 closed until Tuesday evening ended when a Southern California Gas Company crew was able to cap a leak at a private residence in the area.

The March 8 incident occurred at approximately 12:27 when Santa Paula and Ventura County Fire personnel were called to the 19300 block of East Telegraph Road to reports of a strong odor of natural gas.

Motorists traveling eastbound on the highway reported they could also smell a strong odor of natural gas.

When firefighters arrived on scene they could not only smell the gas but could also hear its escape.

Four more Ventura County and a Fillmore City Fire engine were dispatched to the scene as well the California Highway Patrol and a SoCalGas crew.

It was found that the gas leak was occurring at a ranch house near an orchard and its occupants were evacuated.

The California Highway Patrol then closed an eastbound lane of Highway 126 east of Hallock Drive and west of Toland Road. Although it was initially reported that the lane might remain closed until approximately 7 p.m., when the SoCalGas crew arrived on the scene were able to shut off the gas.

The eastbound lane was reopened to traffic shortly 3 p.m.

No one was injured in the incident.
