Kathy Whitesell, a watercolorist and teacher who also devotes time to volunteering to develop the talents of others will be the Demonstration Artist of the Month at the November 13 Santa Paula Society of the Arts meeting.

“All are welcome,” SPSA President Virginia Gunderson said of the free meeting open to the public, not just society members.

The session starts at 2 p.m. at the historic Depot, located at the corner of 10th and Santa Barbara streets in the second level SPSA Gallery.

Whitesell is a Camarillo-based artist and an active board member of the Camarillo Art Center where she also offers art lessons.

“I support art education and the appreciation of the arts by volunteering my time to help with workshops, art events and teaching a beginners watercolor class. I always hear people say ‘I wish I could do that.’ I want to help the beginner painter to just have fun and learn to let the watercolor paint flow,” while they learn the technique of the beautiful but often challenging medium.

Whitesell said she also becomes a student by her teaching: “I have found that by teaching watercolor painting, I also am challenging myself by painting subjects that push me out of my comfort zone by playing with colors, texture and techniques. I want to share my love of seeing color in nature with people who want to try something creative just for themselves.”

Practical as well as artistic Whitesell will start Sunday’s demonstration with “The wet into wet sky — the backdrop of the landscape painting.”

The Santa Paula Society of the Arts was founded in June 1968 by a group of artists in Santa Paula who wished to maintain their friendships in the future; to increase their understanding and to improve their work; to encourage artistic growth, interest and art appreciation in all phases of the arts; to offer scholarships and encouragement to talented students; to encourage civic interest, cultural awareness and to increase development of the arts.

The SPSA Gallery and Gift Shop is open Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m., and by appointment for tour groups.
