Applications coming in for new SPUHS superintendent job

Over 40 people have requested applications for the job of Superintendent of the Santa Paula Union High School District.

That’s the word relayed to district trustees by Dr. Charles Weis, Ventura County Superintendent of Schools. His office is conducting the search and initial screening of applicants for the job. Current Superintendent, Dr. William Brand is retiring at the end of this school year.

His office is conducting the search and initial screening of applicants for the job. Current Superintendent, Dr. William Brand is retiring at the end of this school year.Applications are due by February 21 at 4:00 p.m., with screening taking place the following week. Dr. Weis said that they are still on their designated timeline for a mid-April selection. Weis and his staff have met with various individuals and community groups to gather information on what qualities they wanted to see in a new superintendent. “Without exception, everyone with whom we met focused on the students and their needs,” Weis said. “They have an unbending commitment to having the best education possible for every student in Santa Paula. It was an honor and privilege to meet with them all.”
Here is a summary of the questions asked and responses received from the community: Question #1: What do you consider to be the greatest strengths of the Santa Paula Union High School District? • The small school setting that gives students opportunities to receive help and be known by staff as individuals. • A staff of administrative, certificated and classified personnel who are dedicated and care about all the students. • Extra curricular activities that motivate students to do well in school. • The focus on getting more students eligible for higher education.Question #2: What qualities and skills should the new superintendent possess so that you can continue to have a strong and positive district? • Elementary and high school teaching and/or administrative experience. • An open-door policy and strong communication skills. • Good ethics and morals. • Experience with schools and communities similar to Santa Paula. • High expectations for all students.Question #3: What do you consider to be the three to four greatest issues or challenges facing SPUHSD in the next five years? • Reviewing and adjusting the current block scheduling. There are a number of problems that need to be addressed, especially that of not having sufficient classes for all students to have a full schedule. • Classes for English Language Learners. • The articulation of courses from middle school to high school is critical. The new superintendent must be able to work very closely with the elementary districts.Question #4: What knowledge, skills and experience should the new superintendent possess so that he/she can lead the district in meeting and resolving these challenges? • Skills to be a team builder and organization mentor. • A desire to spend time on the campus with students and staff. • Strong communication skills. Someone who can easily interact with everyone in the district and community. Being bilingual would be an asset.
