JV Cards scare off the Lions

The JV Cardinal baseball team came out ready to play and beat the Oaks Christian Lions Friday, 6-1 in a home game. Mike Cortez went the distance on the mound for Santa Paula. He struck out nine and walked only two batters. “He had his best stuff today and it showed,” said Coach Lalo Mota.The Lions took a 1-0 lead with their only run in the fourth inning. The Cards tied it up in the sixth. It was the top of the seventh when Santa Paula took off with a five-run inning. Cortez started things off with a double. Joey Arana hit a single to score Cortez from third. Then Julian Gonzalez hit a line drive triple into right center to score Arana. Back-to-back singles from Johnny Carrillo, Johnny Urrutia and Randy Aguilera also brought in runs.The JV team plays at Nordhoff Friday at 3:30 p.m.
