Fillmore woman killed in solo Highway 126 accident

A 22-year-old Fillmore woman was found dead along a stretch of Highway 126 between 10th and 12th streets that has been the scene of numerous accidents.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA 22-year-old Fillmore woman was found dead along a stretch of Highway 126 between 10th and 12th streets that has been the scene of numerous accidents.Investigators believe that Karen Amber Real had been dead for nearly seven hours before her wrecked 2003 Ford sedan was spotted by a passerby at about 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4th.Real was pronounced dead at 7:22 a.m. by Santa Paula Fire Department personnel, who had responded to the scene of the wreck below the south shoulder of the highway.According to CHP Officer Steve Reid, Real was driving east on Highway 126 when, for an unknown reason, her black Ford “swerved to the right and ran off the roadway. The Ford struck several trees as it traveled down a steep embankment,” and landed nose down in bushes on an embankment adjacent to Santa Clara Street, east of 12th Street.
Real, who was wearing a seat belt, died from blunt-force head and neck injuries, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office spokesman.Real’s vehicle sustained major damage.A resident of the crash scene told investigators that she heard “what she described as a big boom” at 12:45 a.m. “The witness was not sure what the loud noise was and did not call emergency officials to report the incident,” said Officer Reid.The accident is still under investigation to both determine the cause and time that the accident occurred, he added.The stretch of Highway 126 from 10th Street to 12th Street has been the scene of numerous accidents, including those that involved fatalities, over the years.
