In their best performance of the season the Cardinal girls came out swinging and scored in the first 30 seconds against Cate, a historically strong rival. The first score came when Monse Sanchez headed the ball up field and Patty Estrada took it in for a far post shot earning her first goal of the season. The Lady Cards scored again in the 25th minute when Araceli Magana delivered a throw-in to Lizzette Guzman who placed it into the far-post side netting from 25-yards out. Santa Paula dominated play and held Cate to only three shots in the first half.Just five minutes into the second half, Estrada found the net again on a pass from Athena Cabral. Cate took over briefly and scored their only goal of the game. That momentum was short-lived as Maggie Prado lifted a pass over the Cate defense and found Sanchez, who slammed home her first goal of the season.
Rene Sepulveda started at goalkeeper for the Cardinals, filling in for an ill Maria Prado. With no previous goalkeeper training, Sepulveda was given some quick preparation 15 minutes prior to the match by Varsity coach Antonio Gudino. Sepulveda registered six saves against Cate. “She is an amazing athlete with an up-beat confidence in her and the team’s capabilities,” said JV Coach Michael Gonzalez.
