Santa Paula News
Residents of Fillmore, Ojai, Santa Paula and unincorporated areas now have a place to dispose of their recyclable household hazardous materials. The Heritage Valley Collection Facility, located at 743 Sespe Ave. in Fillmore, will be open December 10th and 11th from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Take Highway 126 to Central Avenue and turn left on Sespe. Collection will take place each month on the second Friday/Saturday and no appointments are needed.
The types of recyclable hazardous materials that will be accepted are antifreeze, automotive and household batteries, oil, oil filters, latex paint, fluorescent light tubes, and high intensity lamps. No other materials will be collected at this site and waste may not be dropped off at any other time. The County’s plan for a facility to accept non-recyclable types of household hazardous materials in the West County has been delayed and the County and cities are exploring other options to assist with proper disposal. Residents are encouraged to use the new Heritage Valley facility to dispose of recyclable hazardous materials. When purchasing products, the public should keep in mind the high cost of disposal for hazardous materials. The average cost per participant at local hazardous waste collection events was between $60 and $100 last year. The cities and County currently must pay for these operations with public funds generated by trash hauling fees. By using less hazardous products, consumers can reduce disposal costs as well as protect the environment and the health of their families.
