Varsity Most Valuable Player, Chepe Lara

The Santa Paula Boys Basketball Program held their Annual Recognition Banquet on Friday May 14th. The banquet was well attended by players and their families representing the freshman, JV and Varsity team (approx. 130 people.) Head Coach Joey Ramirez said he was very pleased to have the support of the players, parents and family members. Rusty Smith, Head Coach from Sequoia Community College who is currently the California State Junior College Coach of the year and a former Division Coach for over 15 years, addressed the players and their families on the importance of communication, commitment, dedication the players must maintain in high school in order to be successful as they move closer toward higher education.Coach Ramirez was very pleased that the coaching staff would remain the same with four new coaches being added to the staff, upon board approval, for the upcoming season, which will provide stability and growth for the program.The coaching staff includes, Dave Bavero, freshman; Junior Ramirez, JV; and Joey Ramirez, Head Varsity Coach. Coach Ramirez presented a plaque to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Salas for their ongoing support and commitment to the program.The program would like to extend it’s appreciation to the Board of Directors at the Casa Del Mexicano for allowing the banquet to take place in their hall and to El Pescador restaurant for donating all of the rice and beans for the dinner.
In addition to player recognition, the following individual awards were given:Varsity: Most Valuable Player - Chepe Lara, sophomore; Just Play Hard Award - Andrew Carrera, sophomore; Most Improved - Nathaniel Maynard, junior. JV Awards: Most Valuable Player - Johnny Urrutia; Just Play Hard Award - Bobby Benevides; Most Improved - Daniel Cardoza. Freshman Awards: Most Valuable Player - Nick Pulido; Just Play Hard Award - Omar Arista; Most Improved - Travis Marella.
