It seems there will be a race for City Council after all: Laura Flores Espinosa pulled nomination papers on Friday to run for City Council, two years after she left the city’s governing body after a failed write-in campaign.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesIt seems there will be a race for City Council after all: Laura Flores Espinosa pulled nomination papers on Friday to run for City Council, two years after she left the city’s governing body after a failed write-in campaign.In 2002 Espinosa missed the filing deadline for incumbents and argued in court that the nomination period for all candidates had been extended five days when incumbent Don Johnson declined to run for a third term.Espinosa was also seeking a third term when she missed the deadline for filing nomination papers. Espinosa finished last out of the field of seven candidates in the 2000 election.Espinosa will be facing incumbents Ray Luna and John Procter, both seeking a second term on the City Council.The deadline for filing nomination papers for the Nov. 2 election is August 6. If an incumbent fails to file the filing period is extended five days.
Espinosa was not available for comment.There are four open seats on the Blanchard Community Library Board of Trustees: Ed Geis was recently appointed to fill the seat of Joanne Wright, who abruptly resigned from the board when it failed to explore affiliation options with the city. Wright’s first term expired this year and Geis said he would be running for a full term.Dr. Dora Crouch resigned from the BCL board midway through her four-year term. Longtime incumbent Gene Marzec will not be running for reelection but incumbents Ninette Reyes-Sena and Geis have pulled nomination papers.At press deadline Librarian Dan Robles was on vacation and information on others that might have pulled papers to run for the library board was not available. Nomination papers for the BCL Board of Trustees are available at the library’s front counter.Also coming up are elections for City Clerk – so far incumbent Steven Salas and Deputy City Clerk have pulled nomination papers – and a variety of school board seats at Santa Paula High, Santa Paula Elementary, Santa Clara, Briggs and Mupu school districts.
