On Sunday January 2nd Ventura Audubon Society will participate with more than 55,000 observers throughout the Western Hemisphere in the 105th annual Christmas Bird Count, an all-day census of early winter bird populations. The data collected in this all-volunteer effort is vital in monitoring the status and distribution of resident and migratory birds. The Ventura Audubon count will take place within a 15-mile diameter circle, divided into sections. Birders of all skill levels are invited to participate in the count, which usually begins at 8 a.m. and continues for about 4 hours. Feeder watchers and observers at fixed locations are also needed. The field count will be followed by a potluck dinner, open to any VAS member and/or guest, at the Church of the Foothills at 6279 Foothill Road in Ventura at 6:15 p.m. At this time data from each section will be compiled.
