Kiwanis Club: Citrus Festival Poster Contest draws international entries

Santa Paula News
By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula TimesThe Kiwanis Club of Santa Paula figured that they might garner more entries to the poster contest for the 2005 Citrus Festival, but what they wound up was mind-boggling: over 80 entries in the adult and children categories, the former featuring works from as far away as the Netherlands. The sudden popularity of the art contest – last year there were only about eight entries - was due to the wide world of cyberspace, according to Kiwanis Citrus Festival Poster Contest Co-Chair Bill Grant. “City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz put the contest on the blog, and we’ve gotten entries from all over…the Netherlands, Texas, Washington State and all over California! Was I astonished? I’m overwhelmed!”All the entries were laid out on long tables at the Community Center, where Kiwanis Club members were urged to come in and vote before the final selection is made. “We’ll take the top three of each and let the club members choose which ones they like best,” said Grant. “The most votes wins…,” and the winner is to be decided at a Kiwanis Club meeting.Another competition was for a permanent Citrus Festival logo, and offered a choice between three Patti Fallini designs. When it came to the poster entries, “Each time new ones came in I changed my mind,” noted Janet Grant. Bill Grant said that several entries had been submitted in poster size and were printed professionally.
Kiwanis Club Citrus Festival Poster Contest Co-Chair Mary Mata was taking the ballots and said that the response to this year’s contest was amazing. The worldwide exposure on the city blog was boosted by the grand prize being increased from $100 to $400, “and that helped,” said Grant with a laugh. One artist from Texas had called and “She was really stressed out about making the poster contest deadline,” noted Janet Grant. The prize-winning entry will appear on posters, T-shirts and other items related to this summer’s Kiwanis Club Citrus Festival.
