Phillip H. Romney The wry smile, quick wit and quiet perseverance of Phillip Romney in pursuit of innumerable community causes have come to an end. After battling cancer for the past four years Romney, 59, died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center while awaiting a liver transplant that his doctors did not attempt due to his fragile health.A funeral service will be held at the Unitarian-Universalist Church at 740 East Main Street (between 7th and 8th Streets next to Ebell Park) in Santa Paula on Thursday, July 14 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Santa Clara Valley at 133 North Mill Street, Santa Paula, CA 93060.Born and raised in Santa Paula, Phillip Romney graduated from Santa Paula High School, the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Utah Law School. After earning his law degree in 1970, he joined his father's law firm and practiced law in Santa Paula until shortly before his death. An avid traveler, reader and observer, Romney's activities in the community reflected his broad view that the best answers come from looking and working far and wide to find them. His civic contributions included service as president of the local chapter of the American Red Cross and the Santa Paula Boys & Girls Club, board member of the Santa Paula Foundation, the Santa Paula Memorial Hospital (for which he served as chairman for the past several years) and the Santa Paula Airport Museum, and long service as Santa Paula City Attorney.
