Abraham J. Simon Abraham J. Simon, 83, of Santa Paula, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2005. Abe was born September 30, 1922.His parents, Julian and Afeffe Simon, were Main Street merchants, owning and operating the J. Simon Grocery Store at 1064 E. Main St. in Santa Paula. Traditional of the times, many of the Main Street merchants had living quarters incorporated with their stores, and it was there on Main Street that his younger brother John was born in 1925.Abe grew up in Santa Paula, and graduated from Santa Paula High School with the Class of 1940. He also attended Ventura College. With the onset of World War II, he served in the United States Air Force. After his military duty, Abe decided to spend his life splitting his time between Santa Paula and Montebello. While down south, he worked as a real estate broker. If you had the opportunity to know him, you quickly realized that he had the true “gift of gab.” He never met a stranger. If by chance you were a stranger, within moments he could make you feel as if you were a long lost friend catching up on old news. He had a warm smile that would win over your heart. Those who knew him say he was a good man with a kind heart. He was also at times a painfully truthful man. If you truly did not want him to answer the question, “Does this outfit make me look fat?” don’t ask! He was not shy about having a sense of humor.“Uncle,” as we all called him, had several passions in his life. He loved to read, play golf (especially at the Rio Hondo Country Club, where he was also known to tend bar once in a while), and visit the racetrack. He led a very active life, never staying put in one place for very long. He was always on the go, always with something to do or someone to see.He thoroughly enjoyed life and people. He especially enjoyed spending time with his great-nieces, Melissa (Corky) and Kelly.Uncle, we know that you tried your darnedest to stay here with us; we understand it was time for you to join your parents and brother. Remember we will always love you.
Abe was a member of the Santa Paula Fillmore Masonic Lodge #291 F&AM of California, a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, and a member of the Al Malaikah Shrine.Abe is survived by his niece Robin (husband David) Gillette, great-nieces Melissa (Corky) Binder and Kelly M. Binder, and his sister-in-law Gloria Simon, all of Santa Paula. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Afeffe Simon, and his brother John Simon. The family wishes to thank Norma Viorata for helping us take care of Uncle. We know that you truly loved him.The family also requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Abe’s name to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 3160 Geneva St., Los Angeles, CA 90020.A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 5 at Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula St. at 11 a.m., with burial to follow at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.Arrangements are under the direction of Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula St., Santa Paula, 525-3391.
