Jess Martinez is back this season to head up the Lady Cardinal basketball program. Martinez is being assisted by Fred Terrazas, who is coaching the JV girls.Coach Martinez is optimistic about the varsity this year. He says they come back this season with more experience and depth. “We know that if we can come together and mature in the preseason we have the possibility of having a very good varsity team,” Martinez said. “Our win column should get better, but we need to reduce our mistakes and eliminate turnovers.”Senior Erika Mora is moving from point guard to play low post this year. “Along side Bianca Castillo this move will help us have a better chance for more underneath scoring and rebounds,” Martinez noted. “Both have a short to medium range shot with Erika shooting some three-pointers along the way. Add in 5-foot, 11-inch sophomore Nancy Roman and junior Samara Turrubiartes, this gives us a lot more chances for rebounds and a stronger inside game.”Martinez says that that Castillo and Roman are coming off a good showing at USC camp, where they were both hard to stop at both ends of the court.Andrea Sliger and Tanya Lovio are both back this year at the wing positions. “Tanya is capable of hitting three-pointers plus doing some penetrating to the inside,” Martinez said. “Look for Andrea to be pitted against the opponent’s best player. She’s tough and can frustrate the heck out of you and make you change your game.”Katy Saucedo, who played varsity as a freshman is back with a strong outside game. She’s also willing to play hard on the inside Martinez says. “We are hoping these three will be on their game this season,” he added.
The varsity has two new players at the point position. Irma Rivera, a junior is only 5-feet, 2-inches, but Martinez says she plays like she’s 6-foot. “What makes her stand out is her maturity at USC camp,” he said. “She has lots of spirit and drive to be the best, so look for her to do great things for us this season.”Coach Martinez says the other half of the dynamic duo is Laneija Delgadillo, a sophomore, who is moving up to varsity because of her style of play and her ability. “Like Irma, Laneija can take it inside or out, but her passing is what she will be known for,” Martinez noted. “She also had a great time at USC where she played against older players and held her own.”The Lady Cards play their next home game Monday, December 11 against San Marcos.
