The residence was searched for evidence, and Aguilar was transported to the Santa Paula Police Station before being transferred to Ventura County Jail. Aguilar’s bail is currently set for $500,000, but Juarez said the SPPD would attempt to have the amount increased to $1 million.Also arrested was Waymond Eugene Edwardson, 37, of Santa Paula. Juarez noted Edwardson was arrested on a charge of delaying and obstructing peace officers in performing their duties after “he would not comply with SRT members’” orders during the warrant service. Juarez noted that during the police action the SRT “did deploy a couple of flash bangs for officers’ safety, and we hope we did not disturb the neighborhood too much.”Detective Wally Boggess is the “lead investigator on the case, and is requesting anyone with additional information on the incident or any information on Aguilar’s activity to call him” at 525-4474. “Or,” Juarez added, those with information can “call anonymously” the SPPD recorded Tip Hotline, 933-4253-1-#.Those with information can also call Ventura County Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477). The Santa Paula Police Department Special Response Team served a search warrant and arrested a documented gang member early Tuesday on suspicion of being involved in the shooting of a 20-year-old area man Sunday afternoon.
By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe Santa Paula Police Department Special Response Team served a search warrant and arrested a documented gang member early Tuesday on suspicion of being involved in the shooting of a 20-year-old area man Sunday afternoon.John Rochelle, 20, of Santa Paula, was shot Sunday at about 4 p.m. on the 1000 block of Cadway Street, a cul-de-sac located opposite the Oaks area of the city. Rochelle was hit in the thigh, and the wound was not life threatening. He was transported to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment.According to SPPD Lieutenant Carlos Juarez, “Investigators had information on the suspect involved in the incident, where he lived, and SRT was looking for evidence of handguns” at the Acacia Street home. When the SPPD SRT arrived at the residence, they cleared the house of men, women and children.“The subject” of the search, David Benavides Aguilar, 20, of Santa Paula, a “documented gang member,” was found inside the residence. “We had a probable cause to arrest him,” which was accomplished without incident.
