By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesFour Oxnard area residents were arrested Wednesday after an off-duty Santa Paula police officer decided to check the El Rio area for suspects in a stabbing that occurred earlier that day. The incident, which included a collision between the suspects’ car and another vehicle, occurred at about the same time that Santa Paula High School students walk home at the end of the school day.“On May 13 at approximately 3:35 p.m., the SPPD received a call regarding a large fight near the intersection of Santa Paula and 8th streets,” but according to SPPD Sergeant Joey de los Reyes, upon arrival officers found the participants had fled the area. Officers were notified that an unidentified victim, a male resident of Santa Paula, was transported to Santa Paula Hospital and was being treated for a serious stab wound to the arm and several minor puncture wounds.Sergeant Ishmael Cordero said the investigation revealed that “Three males and one female subject” were riding in a silver Chrysler 300 and “our victim drove up behind them. For whatever reason their focus shifted to the victim” as the vehicles were stopped at the crosswalk. The suspects exited the Chrysler and swarmed the car stopped behind them: “They vandalized the vehicle, broke out a window and were pounding their fists on the vehicle.”The three males riding in the second vehicle got out and confronted the others and a fight ensued. Cordero said one of the Chrysler’s passengers produced a knife and “proceeded to stab the victim several times,” resulting in a wound from the victim’s shoulder down to his wrist. During the fight another male in the second vehicle received a contusion to his eye.The attackers jumped back into the Chrysler and “either someone was trying to block them as they were fleeing or they collided with another vehicle somehow,” which caused damage to their vehicle. The Chrysler 300 fled the area and “were nowhere to be seen. The victims,” said Cordero, “went to the hospital and were treated for their injuries.”
The SPPD had determined the suspects were possibly from the Oxnard/El Rio area, and about three hours later SPPD Officer Frank Huerta, who was off duty and on his way home, “decided to check the El Rio area” and spied the Chrysler driving in the area. The officer contacted Oxnard Police to assist, “which,” noted Cordero, “they did right away. The vehicle was stopped in the area of Vineyard Avenue and Oxnard Boulevard,” and further investigation revealed “that the suspects were involved in the stabbing incident, and they were taken into custody” and transported to the Santa Paula Police Department.Arrested for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon were Diego Duran, 20, of Oxnard, Leonardo Rodriguez, 28, of El Rio, Julio Hurtado, 19, of Oxnard, and Delilah Hernandez, 24, of Oxnard.Cordero said the SPPD has no motive for the attack, “other than these guys are known gang members from the Oxnard area and were probably just out here looking for trouble, attempting to provoke a fight with high school kids. The victims of this attack have no gang affiliations.”The SPPD is looking for information about the third vehicle that was struck by the suspects’ Chrysler as they fled the scene. “We would like them to contact the police department,” said Cordero. “They’re not in trouble; they would be the victims of a hit-and-run and we just want to get their side of the story.”Anyone with information is asked to call the SPPD at 525-4474. If a caller would prefer to remain anonymous, they can call the SPPD recorded Tip Hotline, 933-4253-1-#.
