“We are the Cardinals,” Ponce-Gomez said at the most recent board meeting, where the issue was on the agenda. “We have the Cardinal as a mascot and our colors are red and white. I don’t understand why you would want to change that.”Other board members didn’t share her objections. Chris Wilson said, “I’m always open to change,” he said. “I understand the concerns, at the same time I’m okay overall with the idea of trying something new.” Trustee Terry Nelson said he didn’t see it as a big issue. “I played football here,” he noted. “We still have red and white...I actually think it looks pretty sharp.” Christina Urias, board vice president said she appreciated Ponce-Gomez’ concerns. “However, she said, It’s still red and white and I think it looks great.”The new uniforms debuted at the September 11th game against Whittier Christian High School.

Diana Ponce-Gomez, a trustee of the Santa Paula Union High School District, has objected to the new Cardinal football uniforms.
